UPI has revolutionized payments in India - from street vendors to freelancers, everyone accepts UPI. But instead of sharing your UPI ID manually, a QR code makes it instant and error-free. Here is everything you need to know about creating and using UPI QR codes.

What is a UPI QR Code?

A UPI QR code encodes your payment details - UPI ID, name, and optionally a fixed amount - into a scannable QR code. When someone scans it with any UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, etc.), your details auto-fill and they can pay you instantly.

How UPI QR Works

Behind the scenes, a UPI QR code contains a URL in this format:

upi://pay?pa=yourname@upi&pn=Your%20Name&am=500&cu=INR

  • pa: Your UPI ID (the payee address)
  • pn: Display name
  • am: Amount (optional - leave blank for variable amounts)
  • cu: Currency (always INR)
  • tn: Transaction note (optional)

Who Needs a UPI QR Code?

Shopkeepers and Small Businesses

Print your QR code and display it at the counter. Customers scan and pay - no need to dictate your UPI ID or phone number. Works even without internet on the customer's side (if their UPI app supports offline mode).

Freelancers and Service Providers

Include your QR code on invoices, business cards, or share it via WhatsApp. Set a fixed amount for specific services or leave it open for variable payments.

Rent Collection

Generate a QR with a fixed monthly rent amount. Share with your tenant - they scan and pay the exact amount every month. No confusion about the amount or UPI ID.

Events and Donations

Collecting money for group events, temple donations, or charitable causes? A QR code eliminates the hassle of cash collection.

How to Generate Your UPI QR Code

  1. Open the DesiUtils UPI QR Generator
  2. Enter your UPI ID (e.g., yourname@okaxis, 9876543210@paytm)
  3. Enter your display name
  4. Optionally set a fixed amount and transaction note
  5. Download as PNG (for print) or share digitally

Which Apps Support UPI QR?

UPI QR codes follow a universal standard - they work across all UPI-enabled apps:

  • Google Pay
  • PhonePe
  • Paytm
  • BHIM
  • Amazon Pay
  • WhatsApp Pay
  • All bank apps (SBI YONO, HDFC, ICICI, etc.)

UPI Safety Tips

  • Never share your UPI PIN - the PIN is for sending money, not receiving. No one needs your PIN to pay you.
  • Verify before paying: Always check the payee name after scanning a QR before confirming payment.
  • Beware of fake QR codes: Scammers may paste their QR over a merchant's QR. Always confirm the name matches.
  • QR codes are for receiving: If someone asks you to scan a QR to "receive" money, it is likely a scam - you only scan to pay, not to receive.
  • Set transaction limits: Most UPI apps let you set daily limits to minimize risk.

  • Print at minimum 300 DPI for crisp scanning
  • Ensure good contrast - dark QR on white/light background
  • Size should be at least 3ร—3 cm for reliable scanning
  • Laminate the printout to protect from wear
  • Test the printed QR with 2-3 different phones before putting it up

UPI QR for Small Businesses

If you run a shop, clinic, tuition centre, or any small business, a UPI QR code eliminates the need for a card swipe machine (POS terminal). Key advantages:

  • Zero cost: No POS rental (which costs โ‚น500-1,500/month), no transaction fees on UPI
  • Instant settlement: Money lands in your bank account within seconds, not 2-3 business days like card payments
  • No internet dependency at your end: The customer needs internet, not you. Even a printed QR works when your phone is off
  • Invoice integration: For freelancers, embedding your UPI QR in PDF invoices lets clients pay with one scan instead of copying account details
  • Multiple QR codes: Create separate QR codes for different purposes - one for the shop counter, one with a fixed rent amount, one for your freelance work

As per NPCI data, UPI processed over 14 billion transactions in a single month in 2025. For small businesses in India, accepting UPI is no longer optional - it is what customers expect.
